Jacob Johanssen: Algorithmic masculinity: from the manosphere to the mainstream

This talk begins with a brief historical sketch of the manosphere and then turns to the present where it has slowly entered the mainstream via social media in politics and culture more generally. I then present a psychoanalytic discussion of the psychodynamics of the manosphere and how they relate to contemporary structural crises.

Jacob Johanssen is Associate Professor in Communications at St. Mary’s University, London. He is the author of several books, including Fantasy, Online Misogyny and the Manosphere (2022) and with Steffen Krüger Media and Psychoanalysis: A Critical Introduction (2022). Jacob sits on the executive committee of the Association for Psychosocial Studies and is a founder scholar of the British Psychoanalytic Council.
